WA-08: Primary Results Thread

Today was primary day in Washington State. Polls closed at 8pm PDT and voters went to the polls to vote in a wacky primary that narrowed the fields of all statewide elections down to the two top vote getters for the November general. So what that means is that we're going to see mini-general proxy election results in both WA-08 between Rep. Dave Reichert and Darcy Burner and in the gubernatorial race between sitting Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi.

If you haven't been following Matt Stoller's on the ground coverage over at Open Left you should. Tonight, he's liveblogging results.

You can find them streaming at the WA Secretary of State website HERE.

So far, as of 8:42pm, after Reichert's home county of Pierce County reported, Reichert is ahead of Darcy by just 3 points.

Dave Reichert 47.27
Darcy Burner 44.27

Notably, Reichert can't break 50%, and only barely did so in his home county. The sitting congressman in a low turnout election where the Republicans are the ones motivated to GOTV to avenge Gregoire's narrow win over Rossi can't break 50%. This I think speaks to the enthusiasm gap that Darcy has over Reichert, her excellent GOTV program as well as the fact that she's the only one on the air in the district.

But the numbers can still move as absentee ballots, of which there are many in Washington State, still have yet to be counted. I'll update as results continue to come in.

Update [2008-8-20 0:8:26 by Todd Beeton]:One thing that seems to bode well for Darcy: while the candidates are not listed by party affiliation, they are listed by what party they "prefer" and so far tonight, the "prefers Democratic Party" candidates have a slight majority with 50.03%.

Well, I am going to be contrarian all over the place....

First, Democratic turnout is almost always higher in the primary in WA state, so not sure where Todd is coming up with that fact.

Secondly, Sherrif Dave barely phoned it in, while Darcy outspent and out campaigned her.

IF she loses, that is NOT a good sign, no matter what the spin is.

I know the Netroots is going to beat me up, but I think Darcy is the wrong candidate for the 8th.

She will always have trouble in the southern part of the district, those are law and order blue collar folk.

And, in the rich parts, she comes across as too lefty.

Rodney Tom would put up a stronger challenge to Sherrif Dave is my take.

So, I know that makes me an outlier in the Netroots, both at Kos and here, Darcy is a fav.

Believe me, I hope I am wrong, Sherrif Dave is a total fake.

Maybe a BIG Obama turnout can help her in the fall.

But the 8th will be tough for any one to win that isn't pretty right on most issues.

Re: WA-08: Primary Results Thread (none / 0)

These are positions of consequence from a year ago.  Best you join the present day.  Rodney Tom was long ago knocked out by Burner.  If you can't raise money, you can't win, and Tom wasn't going to be able to raise enough money against Reichert.  Meanwhile, voters chose Burner over the other candidates, so she is the best candidate.  Thirdly, show me the stats that show Democrats turnout higher in the primaries historically?  Rossi tried to make that claim but the press showed that wasn't true.

Take a look at the other congressional races.  All the incumbents scored way higher than 50% and blew away their competition.  The fact Reichert scored only 47% is very bad news for him, regardless of the spin.

Re: WA-08: Primary Results Thread (none / 0)

Sherrif Dave BARELY phoned it in, so I'm sorry, I am sticking with my contention.

And, SURE Darcy outraised Tom. She is, as I say, the sweetheart of the netroots.

Look, I would LOVE as progressive a candidate as possible.

But, Wash state, as you probably know is VERY demographically sharp.

I live on Capital Hill. What, McDermot got like 71% of the vote?

Will she get close. Sure.

But, I think she doesn't get over the hill.

"Best you join the present day."

Sorry, netroots optimism is a poor substitute for political reality.

I have been told twice "The demographic is changing" and I think that is very wishful thinking.

Want to bet?

I got 5 bucks says those numbers are pretty close to the GE.

Reichert will win in the GE by 3-4 points.

See you here on election day?

I could be wrong, but I thought Reichert hailed from Auburn, which is King County not Pierce.

Re: WA-08: Primary Results Thread (none / 0)

Reichert is definitely from King County.  His only previous experience was as King County Sheriff.

Re: WA-08: Primary Results Thread (none / 0)

The eighth district spreads over Sammish (where my buds live) King and Pierce. That is the southern part that is very law and order....
